Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Intersection Improvements on Regional Road 55 (Niagara Stone Road) Regional Road 90 (Airport Road) to Line 2 Road in the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake

The Study

Niagara Region (the Region) has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) to address intersection improvements on Regional Road 55 (Niagara Stone Road) from 150 metres west of Regional Road 90 (Airport Road) to 75 metres east of Line 2 Road, in the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The study has been initiated to identify and evaluate a variety of intersection improvement alternatives to help improve traffic flow within the Regional Road 55 (Niagara Stone Road) corridor, reduce traffic infiltration through local neighbourhoods and improve the overall safety of the roadway. Improvement alternatives may potentially include a combination of the following:

  • Addition/modification of auxiliary lanes
  • Traffic control upgrades
  • Roadway realignments
  • Implementation of roundabouts

In addition to potential intersection improvements, the study will identify and address other engineering aspects of the study area including roadway geometrics, cross roads, drainage, culverts, current pavement condition, utilities, and services.

The Process

The study is being conducted in compliance with Schedule C of the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (October 2000, as amended in 2007), which is approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.The Class EA process includes public and regulatory agency consultation, evaluation of a range of alternative solutions, assessment of the impacts of the proposed improvements, and identification of measures to mitigate and adverse impacts.

Public Information Centre (PIC)

A PIC is a key component of the Class EA process and provides an opportunity for the public to review the alternative solutions, offer comment and discuss concerns and issues with representatives from the Project Team. Comments received from the public will be considered in the preparation of the Environmental Study Report. With the exception of personal information, all comments will be part of the public record.

The first of two scheduled Public Information Centres for this study will be held on:
