Wanted: Photos of Niagara
Images needed for Cultural Capital of Canada textile art project

NIAGARA REGION, Jan. 24, 2012 - Niagara's photographers - professional and amateur - are being asked to submit images that reflect the rich textures and natural beauty of the region.

Selected images will be used for the design inspiration of a collaborative textile and mixed media art project - one of 26 activities and events taking place this year to celebrate Niagara's designation as a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2012.

When completed, the textile artwork will be permanently displayed at Regional headquarters in Thorold. The photos on which the artwork will be based will also be exhibited as an accompaniment to the final product.

Photos submitted for this project must be detailed images that represent and reflect the rich textures and natural beauty of Niagara. Residents may submit up to five images.

The deadline for entries is Feb. 15, 2012.

Photographers will be compensated $500 if their work is selected.

"Niagara is blessed with many talented textile artists and photographers, and this project is designed to showcase this talent in a very permanent way," said Terri Donia, coordinator of Niagara Region's Cultural Capital of Canada events and activities. "This collaborative effort will result in a lasting tribute to the beauty of Niagara and to the region's vibrant and talented arts community."

Examples of images include, but are not limited to:

  • Vineyards/grapes
  • Waterfalls and other natural scenes
  • Produce bins at farmers markets
  • Floral gardens
  • Locations of historical or cultural significance

As a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2012, Niagara will be the site of a year-long celebration with the theme "Crossing Boundaries: Niagara's Creative Spirit."

The activities involve a wide range of groups, forms of cultural expression and events in every part of Niagara. Projects will involve dance, theatre, nights of art, history walks, after-school arts and culture programs, an interactive media display on the Welland canal, a Native women's history exhibit, a traditional lacrosse game featuring players from Niagara's history, a virtual museum of Niagara and a newly commissioned choral work. All will be open to the public, and most will be free or have a nominal charge.
