Regional Chair Caslin announces purchase of Fort Erie property for redevelopment of Gilmore Lodge long-term care home

Regional Chair Alan Caslin today announced that Niagara Region has purchased a property in Fort Erie that will serve as the future home of Gilmore Lodge long-term care home.

The 11-acre site, located at 200 Garrison Road, is ideally suited to accommodate a campus of facilities and services to better support Fort Erie’s aging population. It will accommodate a new long-term care home and additional residential and mixed-use facilities. The campus-style approach allows for efficiencies to be obtained through shared services such as kitchen, laundry and property maintenance. It also allows for greater options for alternative service delivery as there are more opportunities to develop partnerships for development or service delivery.

The purchase price of the property is $4.2 million.

Gilmore Lodge, located at 50 Gilmore Road, is an 80-bed home constructed in 1988. It is one of three homes operated by the Region that must be redeveloped by 2025 to comply with new provincial building standards. The other two are Linhaven in St. Catharines and Upper Canada Lodge in Niagara-on-the-Lake with 256 beds and 80 beds respectively.

Niagara Region operates eight long-term care homes serving 1,500 residents annually. It also provides a range of community programs and services intended to help aging adults live at home safely and independently.
