The Region operates six separate water systems and 11 wastewater systems, with more than 500 kms of pipes for water and sewer. The Region supplies water to the area municipalities, who supply it to the residents & businesses in their community.
Niagara Region is responsible for the operation, installation and maintenance of water and sewer systems. This includes water & sewer approvals, laboratory services, environmental monitoring and industrial waste.
Under Ontario Regulation 170/03 both the Regional Municipality of Niagara and the area Municipalities have the responsibility to provide Water Quality Reports. You can review these results by municipality.
The Baker Road Waste Water Treatment Plant that serves the municipalities of Grimsby, West Lincoln and Lincoln treated an average of 22.7 million litres of sewage a day in 2009. That is about 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools a day.
In 2009, the Port Colborne water treatment plant supplied residents with 2.3 billion litres of water. This is equal to 6.5 billion cans of pop, or enough for one can for each person on the planet.
