Water Projects and Planning for Niagara Region

Niagara Region is responsible for the operation, installation and maintenance of water and sewer systems.

Project Updates

The Construction Project Report details the progress of each project being planned, under construction, tendered or recently completed.

Plans, Studies and Projects

The following projects and studies are currently proposed, underway or recently completed.

  • Biosolids Master Plan Review
Biosolids and residuals are solid or semi-solid material obtained from treated wastewater often used as a fertilizer or soil amendment. We studying the management of biosolids and residuals generated by the Region's water and wastewater treatment plants.

  • Water and Wastewater Master Servicing Plan
The Region is examining its water and wastewater infrastructure. This study is being conducted to develop a long-term servicing strategy for Niagara Region's water and wastewater systems.

  • Wainfleet Water and Sewer Project
Municipal water and sewer services do not exist in Wainfleet. Residents rely on well water and septic systems. Regional and Provincial studies identified a significant public health concern and resulted in an Environmental Assessment process to identify possible solutions.

  • Northeast Area Wastewater Servicing Study
Wastewater capacities in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines/Thorold and Niagara-on-the-Lake are approaching their limits. A study was conducted to evaluate existing infrastructure and address existing and future requirements.

  • Niagara Falls and Thorold Trunk Watermain Interconnect
Construction of a new watermain to connect the Niagara Falls Water Treatment Plant system with the DeCew Water Treatment Plant system to improve the fire flow capacity and increase the system security.

Financial Planning

We are required to prepare a Water Financial Plan to plan for the long-term funding of our drinking water systems. It represents a current snapshot of Niagara's financial position.

This is part of the Municipal Drinking Water Licensing Program.
