Northeast Area Wastewater Servicing Study

From past studies, Niagara Region identified that wastewater flows in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines/Thorold and Niagara-on-the-Lake are approaching capacity of some infrastructure.

Collectively, the previous studies have identified a large number of options to meet present and future wastewater servicing needs. An overall assessment of the Region's wastewater systems is contained in Master Servicing Plan Update (2003).

In addition, there are wet weather flow issues and combined sewer overflows in the individual municipalities in the Region.

As the most pressing issues are in the Northeast Area (Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Region contracted Hatch Mott MacDonald Ltd., with its subconsultant XCG Consultants, to carry out a wastewater servicing study for the NE Area.

The objective of this study was to:

  • evaluate existing infrastructure

  • address existing and future requirements for both dry weather and wet weather flows

  • follow the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process for Master Plans and satisfy Phases 1 and 2 of that process
