Community Programs for Seniors

Senior Niagara Region offers programs for seniors who want to keep active, healthy and engaged in their community and who want to remain at home as long as possible. Other Support Organizations offer services for seniors which are not operated by the Niagara Region.

Options Available for Seniors

As a senior, your independence, health and quality of life are important and so is your desire to remain in your home as you age. We offer non-medical programs, services and resources to enrich your life by supporting your independence while promoting health and wellness.

  • Niagara Gatekeepers
Niagara Region is giving new life to a program designed to help 'at risk' seniors who may need assistance due to deteriorating health or other circumstances.

  • Adult Day Service
Socialize with other seniors and take part in a variety of leisure, educational, and physical activities that you enjoy - at your own pace.

  • Supportive Housing
An alternative for individuals who need some degree of care and support to live independently within a supervised residence or building.

  • Client Intervention and Assistance
An assessment of your non-medical needs and the establishment of a plan to support you and your desire to remain independent.

  • Elder Abuse Prevention
Learn to recognize the risk signs and develop strategies to minimize risks.

  • Healthy, Safe, Strong

Support for Caregivers

As a caregiver, you want to provide the best care and support possible. We can assist you with the care requirements, provide you with a much needed break and work with you and your loved one to come up with a plan designed to optimize his/her quality of life.

  • Respite Companion Program
An in-home service that offers you relief in your role as caregiver while offering supervision, sensory stimulation, companionship and meaningful activities to your loved one.

  • Information and Referral
This may be your first step to service as we can connect you with the information and resources you need.

  • Caregiver Education and Information
We offer individual information about your specific caregiving issues including health teachings, activities, dementia and service provision as well as group presentations.

  • Overnight and Short-Stay Respite
Temporary relief as a caregiver is important for your well-being. Overnight and short-stay accommodation for older adults with dementia is available at The T. Roy Adams Regional Centre for Dementia Care - Respite Centre and can provide you with a much needed break and the reassurance that your loved one is well cared for in your absence.

Partnerships

We receive funding from the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network, from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and partner with community organizations to deliver quality services.

The Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network is working with its stakeholders to further support efforts for healthy living in our community and aging at home.

In partnership with the Gatekeeper Advisory Group, we offer presentations, support and general information about the program. The Niagara Gatekeepers work to identify isolated or vulnerable seniors in the community and link them to appropriate support services before a crisis situation develops. The Gatekeeper Hotline is 905-984-0698.
