The first years of a child's life are the most important in determining their health, growth and development and the way they relate to others. Just as their bodies need food to grow, science now tells us that the positive emotional, physical, and intellectual experiences that a baby has in the earliest years are equally necessary for the growth of a healthy brain. Of course, parents and caregivers are vitally important to this development through nurturing and stimulation of their children. With this knowledge the province has funded Healthy Babies Healthy Children, a program designed to help parents give their children the very best start in life. Public health nurses follow up on all births and offer a home visit to all mothers soon after hospital discharge. Along with trained home visitors, they offer information, support and advice to strengthen parenting, enhance child development and make appropriate connections to community agencies.

Postpartum Support
All families of newborns are offered support at the time of
the birth of their child. A screening tool is used in hospital
in order to best determine the services and resources that
will fit their needs. After the birth of their child, mothers
receive a phone call from a public health nurse within 48
hours of leaving the hospital. All families are also offered
a home visit by a nurse. In this way, new mothers receive
information and support regarding their own postpartum health
and the health and care of their newborn.
If you have questions about your health or your newborn, please call the Parent Talk Line at 688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7555.
Home Visiting:
Healthy Babies Healthy Children in-home services are provided
by a variety of professionals as well as Family Home Visitors.
Professional visitors include public health nurses, social
workers, infant development therapists and speech pathologists.
Family Home Visitors are parents from the community who have
received special training. They support parents, help them
learn about child development and parenting, link them to
services in their community and help them to solve everyday
challenges. Family Home Visitors are supported in their role
by one of the professionals outlined above.
The Healthy Babies Healthy Children program can be accessed at any point during the growth of your family:
