Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer is a risk for all women. The two major risks for developing breast cancer are being a woman and increasing age. Breast cancer deaths can be reduced by up to one-third in women aged 50-69 if they have a mammogram every two years. Mammograms can find lumps before they can be felt.

  • It is estimated that 1 in 9 women will get breast cancer during their lifetime and 1 in 27 will die due to breast cancer (Canadian Cancer Statistics, 2003)
  • 75% of breast cancer occurs in women who are 50 and older (Statistics Canada, 2003)
  • All women have some risk of getting breast cancer.
  • If breast cancer is found early, more can be done to treat it.
